Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony is a monument to the suffering of the Russian people during the Second World War. Seemingly tracing a familiar symphonic journey from the tragic to the triumphant, the triumph depicted is so uneasy that, as is so often the case with Shostakovich, the conclusion is ambiguous.
